Colorado Prison Inmate Dog Training Program

kari-s-683x1024Recently I have been fostering dogs from the kill shelters in New Mexico.  I asked my mentor, Becky,  “What happens if I get a dog I can’t handle?”  She said that Kari Solberg, with Colorado Canine Rescue, can take them and train them herself.  Kari trained with Cesar Millan at the Dog Psychology Center in California. She went to the dog whisperer’s school to learn how to train dogs professionally and has since opened her own training company here in Denver Colorado.

The other more indepth option is to hand the dog over to the prisoner dog training program.  Basically they have convicts spend the large amount of time and energy it takes to get a dog socialized and confident after being in a poor, neglectful, often abusive environment.

They sent me this video link to kind of explain the program.  Got a kleenex?

Adopt Porter

309f276b-d351-485a-905a-b90a8c8c5b93I’m a sweet female Lab-Rottweiler (they think!) puppy about 4 months old. I arrived in Colorado in late October from a shelter in New Mexico. I have lots of healthy puppy energy, I’m very curious, and I love people and dogs. I’m very social and I’m still learning a lot, so I need a home that can give me the attention that all puppies need. I have been sleeping in a crate and staying in a crate for a few hours at a time during the day, and I’ve done great with that. I’m learning more every day… going up and down stairs, house training… you name it!

Return of the Foster Dogs

Here is an update on the Colorado Canine Rescue dogs I transported the other weekend.

Out of nowhere the foster mom had to go into back surgery this Friday.   I raised my hand to help out and Amy Taylor brought Sasha and Athena back to my house on Saturday morning.  Of course they got sick on the way over, so Amy got to clean her kennel and I got to bath the dogs again.  Luckily it was a nice hot day and they seemed to enjoy it. Sasha was scheduled to meet a family that afternoon, so Dan Gordon picked her up and took her to her meet and greet.  Apparently it went really well and she was adopted on the spot, which is a rare occurrence.

20150801_201223I now have Athena staying with me.  She has had a few applications submitted so we just need to do some background checks, introductions and hope for the best.  She is very smart and alert. She would make a great companion and watch dog.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Colorado Canine Rescue

20150801_201650This past weekend my son Gavin and I got involved with the transportation of 2 German Shepherd puppies rescued from a under funded, bursting at the seams, compassionate kill shelter in Hobbs New Mexico. These puppies and a bunch of other dogs were brought up by a group of compassionate people from Colorado. They bring the dogs up and foster them until they can find a forever home for them. This is the group that we got our Corgidor Stubbs from…. Continue reading “Colorado Canine Rescue”
